Dear MSc and Advanced MSc Students,

This is a long email. But it is a very important one. Please read all of it carefully. It contains important information about the examination period and the rest of the Summer term that affects you.

I hope you have a peaceful and productive revision period during the next few weeks. If you are ill, or have other difficulties affecting your work during the revision or the examination period please let me know immediately so that this can be taken into account if necessary. The Board of Examiners can only take into account difficulties which have been reported. IT WILL BE TOO LATE IF YOU WAIT UNTIL THE RESULTS ARE OUT. Health  problems can be  taken into account only if there is a medical certificate from a  bona fide doctor.

During the exams:
A word of warning:
The College has very severe regulations regarding absence from examinations without prior permission from the course director. Such permission is given rarely and only for very good and documented reasons.

Here is an extract from the College regulations regarding absence:
"Where a candidate fails to attend an examination, including submission of the dissertation, and further fails to provide a medical certificate or proof that deferral was agreed in advance by the appropriate College committee ... he/she will be deemed to have failed the degree programme in its entirety, without exemption allowed on re-entry."

Absence from an examination must be supported by a medical certificate that you were unfit to take the examination - you should go to the Health Centre the same day. The Health Centre has asked us to make clear that they cannot certify that a student has been ill if he/she has not been seen at the centre by a doctor or a nurse during that illness".

If you are late getting to College for an exam you should go immediately to the exam room and explain the reason to the invigilator; you will probably still be able to take the paper. IT IS MUCH BETTER TO ARRIVE LATE THAN NOT TO ATTEND AT ALL.

An important reminder:
You will need to re-submit all your assessed coursework and laboratory work after the examinations for inspection by the External Examiners. So please keep all your assessed work safe and tidy.

Another important reminder:
Of course after the examinations you will need a break and a well deserved one. But after that SHORT break please ensure that you make a determined start on your projects. Contact your supervisor as soon as possible after the exams and plan the work carefully. The project requires a full-time period of four months. Our project pass and distinction standards are high.
